Carter County History
Carter County was named for General Landon Carter. The county seat, Elizabethton, is named after his wife, Elizabeth MacLin Carter.

Carter County is part of East Tennessee, one of Tennessee's Three Grand Divisions. These divisions are not only geographic, but also cultural and defined in state law. Carter County is also part of the South Central Region of Appalachia.
